Thoughts on all things geeky by Stuart Storey

What Happened to Second Life? A Sweeping Statement?

After watching this video from Chris Pirillo, two words sprung to my mind. The words I thought were "Sweeping Statement".

"A sweeping statement is a statement that makes a wide-ranging and complete comment about something, or more often, everything. Unfortunately, it is very common for people to make these sorts of statements when they, in fact, are talking about minor groups rather than "everybody" "

It always disappoints me when I hear people involved in technology and people who I follow just go out and say things like "Second Life is just for porn" and I think it really is just loses the credibility of the person making that statement even futher. The problem is these people also tend to have a bit of authority and people listen to what they say. I myself follow Chris, not as often as I used to because his YouTube stream got a bit to overkill for my taste.

The point I'm trying to make however is that Second Life is not just for Porn or Gambling. Sure those things exist and I'm not going to deny that. But it is a small portion of the whole package. There is so much happening in Second Life that you cannot define it under one swift statement, and I think that is what is hard about the platform.

Examples of thriving communities within Second Life include the Fashion Industry, The Steampunk Community, The Music Community and much much more. There is a commnity being built around almost everything you can think of that happens in these worlds. That is the true appeal of Second Life for me.

The Killer App of Second Life is, and shall always be, COMMUNITY. Isn't that what these so called "Social Media Experts" job, to build communities around a brand.

I was upset too!, as soon as i saw this video on Chris's page i fired him an open-letter e-mail

Dear Chris,

I am a fan of your reviews and dedication to technology and IT however i believe you may have missed the point out of recent events within second life.

* All pornography has been moved to its own land zone that Linden Lab (The company who runs second life) owns, Anyone who tries to get adult content without being IDed as an adult will not have access to this content.
* Gambling has been banned from 1st August 2007 and has not been active for 4 years now
* The Viewer has been recently simplified with Viewer 2.0 developed by Linden Lab, there are still bugs within this viewer and most people use emerald (a 3rd party free viewer approved by linden lab)
* OpenSims have now opened up, OpenSimluation Projects have caught the sights of IBM and Microsoft both developing there own "second life like" project.

So id like to personally show you around second life again and show you threes more to second life than just "Porn and Gambling"
Let me know when a time and place suits you. im in the EU time zone location so we may have to work thought timezones to see what we can do.

In the general semantics-inspired books I read when I was a kid, Stuart Chase called them "thumping generalities". I wonder whether Pirillo is equally cavalier and unencumbered by data in his other work.

What a sad dwarf that Pirillo guy is! Obviously this nerd doesn't know what he is talking about and all he does is mirroring other dwarfs who are appearently to lazy to come inworld to have a look themselves. Secondlife is still very much alive. Yeah, for people that search for it there is porn everywhere. For people that search for education, art, community, friends, etc. Secondlife is a gem.
