OK i have mentioned this before on my shows about how much I love the idea of LLMedia API.

My reason for loving this is because quite frankly, i absolutely HATE Quicktime. It in my opinion is one of the worst web based plugins and a totally awful implementation in Second Life.

Too many times have I been put to the issue of having to wait for a minute for my viewer to stop hanging because I or Somebody else pressed play on the media button and I wonder WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON!

As much as Flash is bloated, at least it doesn’t kill my web browser and I’m praying that if / when its implemented it won’t be a total piece of bloated fail.

I watch a hell of a lot more live streaming flash video shows than I do for Quicktime. Infact the only people I know that use quicktime for streaming video is Treet.TV and I believe thats just because its necesarry for people to watch in-world.

Flash streaming is a far more viable solution for so many people due to the cost of it. It’s essentially free if you use services like UStream and Justin.TV. I can think of so many use cases then for media.

Would it not be cool to see a Musician playing live in Second Life but be watching them streaming themselves on a webcam?

Would it not be cool to watch Space Shuttle launches in Second Life on a TV from SpaceVidcast.com just like people do in RL

Not to mention an actual working implementation of HTML on a Prim.

Oh and since it’s all Client based for the settings, I see no reason why this stuff won’t start appearing in grids like OSGrid.

I’ve been slowly getting into a fan of Wiki Editing. This all began about a year ago when I decided to do a few pages for the Second Life Wikia. Then about a month ago I visited the site once again and just generally surfing the site just to pass the time while waiting to record a podcast.

Something hit me, alot of data on the wiki needs to be improved upon alot. There are a lot of red-link pages that need to be addressed and out of date data.

So i’ve decided that now i’ve finished this college year and enter the transition phase towards university that I will take it upon myself to do some projects on the wiki.

Why am I wanting to do this?

Wiki’s have always been things that I am a fan of, and let’s be honest. Second Life is my passion. It feels like a natural fit to work on some projects for the wiki.

Coming this Saturday at 4PM SLT is the first ever, XTRA special edition of MetaNews Daily, SLPN’s daily news show all about virtual worlds and the issues relating to this.

This Thursday news broke from Australia that new legislation relating to online games that have a rating of 15+ would be blocked from Australia. (which Second Life would fall under due to a technicality)

There are a bunch of Australians that have a significant impact on virtual worlds, including Second Life. Need a few examples. Well for one there’s Treet.TV (formerly SLCN), Second Life’s biggest virtual television network and one of the big businesses to come from Second Life.

So I have decided to hold a special edition of our MetaNews show to specificially discuss the issues and have an open roundtable to discuss this issue. By open, i mean open.

I will be specifically inviting various Australians who reside in virtual worlds to talk about this over the next day to take part in this discussion.

This special edition of Meta News will take place at SL6B on our plot over on SL6B Cryo at http://slurl.com/secondlife/SL6B%20Cryo/150/223/23

The episode recording will be done in voice and takes place on Saturday at 4PM SLT. I encourage you to spread the word on this discussion and if your an Aussie, I HIGHLY encourage you to turn up for this discussion.

Nika Dreamscape, Awesome Neighbour, Awesome Friend and someone who needs to get help for her chicken addiction, wrote a blog post on the faboulus community where I happen to live, Corona Cay. So I asked if I could cross post it on my blog, which she said I could.

Before you read this, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU VISIT NIKA’s BLOG.

I’ve been meaning to write this post for a little while, and now seems like a great time to get this out there.

Corona Cay has been my home for the past few months, and it has been an absolutely wonderful place to live. We have a tight-knit, creative community consisting of artists, bloggers, podcasters and musicians. The island itself is a beautiful network of several ‘mini islands’ situated around the central hub of our island- Destination Station.

Corona Cay Overview

Right now, there are five plots available on Corona Cay. Because of the design of the island, every plot has an ocean view on at least two sides. The parcels cost only $3000L per month to rent, and support 351 prims. Two of the available plots happen to be next to each other, so you have the option to buy both of them, doubling your parcel size and increasing the prim count to 700.

The community on Corona Cay is very social and active. We have weekly events such as live podcast recordings at the SLPodcast.net studios, fishing tournaments, car races on our speedway, and general gatherings around the Destination Station where we just chat and hang out. Since Corona Cay is home to Destination Station, we get a good amount of traffic through the area. Destination Station is a hub containing a collection of some of the best places to explore, in SL.

Because we get so many visitors and new residents of SL coming to our island, all of our builds at ground level are considered to be “open house”, and are open to the public to be explored and enjoyed. Because of this, we try to make all of our builds at ground level beautiful, visually interesting, entertaining, or interactive. For those of us that do require privacy, our skyboxes are considered to be private and off limits, except by invitation. Security orbs at ground level are not allowed, as we WANT visitors to the island to be able to explore and enjoy everything on the island. But security orbs in skyboxes are permitted. Ban lines of course, are prohibited.

Corona Cay offers several great amenities.

Corona Speedway. The Corona Speedway track circles the entire island. There are public cars available next to the Destination Station, that you can use to race your friends, or just drive around the island.

Destination Station. A collection of the best places we have found, to explore in SL. Each destination is hand selected or recommended to us. Click on any panel in the Station to open the world map, and teleport to that location.

SLPN Live Events. Many podcasts on the Second Life Podcast Network record live shows at the SLPN Studio. The recordings are open to the public, and there is audience seating. Podmafia records every Tuesday morning at 7am SLT. Coronaverse records most Saturday evenings at 5pm SLT. On occassion, we also have special events like our Corona Cay Speedway Series, Sunday Night Knockout boxing event, and Katana Tournaments.

7Seas Fishing. We have a very nice dock set up next to the Destination Station for 7Seas Fishing, and sometimes we hold fishing tournaments there.

Coronaverse. Residents of Corona Cay host a weekly podcast, where we gather and talk about the latest events in Second Life. We record most Saturday evenings, and residents of Corona Cay are invited to either participate, or just sit back and listen. http://slpodcast.net/shows/variety/coronaverse/

Public Space Crafts. Parked outside the Primagination building, right next to the SLPN Studios. Island owner Itazura Radio has made his spaceships available to the public. The spaceships will fit several avatars, and have a weapons system so you can have laser battles in the sky.

Sounds interesting, so far? Here are the available plots:

Meet your new landlord. Owner of Corona Cay. Talented Scripter, builder, podcaster. Formerly Abnor Mole. Itazura/Abnor Mole hepled build much of the content in Zindra as well as the Linden Roads Routes 7 and 8. Producer/host of the Rezzed And Confused Podcast. Itazura built Corona Cay from the ground up, and nearly everything on it.

Radar Masukami

“Get off my lawn! And get your damn cat out of here!” Radars bark is worse than his bite. Self-proclaimed grouch, but one of the best friends I’ve made in a long time. Radar used to produce and host the SL Under The Radar podcast. Occassionally appears on Coronaverse.

Anima Zabaleta.

Unfortunately, no picture available. Anima doesn’t get in world very often. But when she does, she is a sweet person and a good friend to have.

Stuart Warf

CEO of SLPN. Stuart Warf joined the podcasting community in Second Life together, creating the Second Life Podcast Network. (SLPodcast.net). Stuart is the host and producer of several podcasts, including Podmafia, Building With Warf, Coronaverse, and MetaNews Daily. He is in charge of organizing many of the Corona Cay events.

Danny Dwyer

Danny is like the social butterfly of the island. He loves having people drop by his house for a drink and a chat, and can often be found hanging around the Destination Station, or wherever else people happen to be gathered. You will often hear him appearing in the Coronaverse podcast.

Nika Dreamscape

If you’re reading this, you know who I am. Blogger, artist, podcaster, yadda yadda. I’m most usually working up in my skybox, but on Saturday nights I love hanging out in the Destination Station with everyone else.

Keeme Brown

Keeme is without a doubt, the funniest person I’ve ever met, and my best friend. He’s full of ideas and creativity, and will be the first person to come up and introduce himself to anyone he comes across. For almost a year, we hosted the Diamonds and Rust podcast together. Keeme has his own blog at Keeme.com. And his podcast, Keemecast, can be found by searching iTunes.

Jesta is one of our local musicians. He did the theme song for the Coronaverse podcast. Because of the time difference, I’ve only actually seen Jesta in world a few times, but he has always been very friendly. His work and other links can be found at www.jesta.co.uk

Arri Gaffer

Because of work, Arri isn’t able to get in SL too often, but its always fun to have a chat with him, when he is around. Arri’s talents include building in SL, and independant film production.

You can see his art in world at his gallery space on Corona Cay, and his music and podcast work is available on http://www.guydavid.com/ Some of Bluesmoke’s music can be heard on 100 Word Stories podcast, and Podmafia Podcast.

On May the 2nd 2006 I decided to ahead and create an account for Second Life and join in the fun of podcast scene entering Second Life. While a lot of people from the early days have now left the virtual worlds and some joke about the world, probably because they just didn’t get it (which sadly seems to be the case even in some shows I listen to) the core community from the early days are still around and I think it just shows the strength of the podcasting community. Why I am talking about this is because a couple of weeks ago at the ninetieth episode of The Podmafia Podcast we were reminiscing about how we came into the world.

Some of the people came in via TWiT when Leo “Pruneface Spatula” Laporte came in after discovering the world and promptly left and never came back, he seems to do that alot with communities.

Others came after Adam Curry of Podshow (then Mevio) was touting about his castle in the world and talking about all his ideas to integrate podcasting into Second Life and the sense of excitement about this virtual world and the endless possibilities. I was one of those people, Now while I do think he is an ass now, listening to all the stuff happening in this virtual world inspired me and made me want to be a part of that world. I also think that i wasn’t the only one who got inspired.

Looking at other people in the podcasting scene, some went off and became not only builders, but successful builders who are able to earn enough money to work just doing builds in Second Life or at least be able to help pay for their time and effort in the world. Others have successful stores selling gadgets and devices to help improve their second lives.

Looking back at everything that has happened in this virtual world it makes me smile to see how far we’ve come in just 3 years. I can’t think of anything that has changed so drastically in just three years. I can remember the number of accounts when I joined, it was 200,000. I think the highest concurrency was like 15,000 maybe a little more or less. I can remember the days when we couldn’t log in to SL for a day due to SL going broke at 20,000 concurrency.

Actually, another thing that used to be a regular occurrence was that EVERY Wednesday SL would shut down and the podcasters would get together and we would have a die-in. AKA we would be booted off SL and not be able to return for 5 hours. Now people get annoyed not being able to log in for an hour. Granted its unscheduled and therefore a pain, but in retrospect, it’s not as bad as it used to be.

SL is far better and far more stable than it was a year ago.

Seriously. I am currently watching the Linden Lab press conference via Mogulus and one thing I keep hearing is the word censorship.

Lets take a look at Censorship.

“an official who examines books, plays, news reports, motion pictures, radio and television programs, letters, cablegrams, etc., for the purpose of suppressing parts deemed objectionable on moral, political, military, or other grounds.”

Linden Lab is not suppressing the content, its just seperating it to make it easier for users to get to. Ever heard of a Red Light District? Same Thing.

Lets not forget that Linden Lab is a private company. The fact is, they do whatever is good for business. This move for the most part is GOOD for business.

I could go all day with this, but I just can’t be bothered. I’d rather just get back to do what I do.

As much as I think the snapshots on the login screen on the SL viewer is cool. I really think it’s missing something important.

I know, a SLurl to the location that is being shown on the screen, that would be a very nice addition to the login screen. Actually I also think while i’m on this topic, I need to know, when the hell is Linden Lab going to return the old latest blog posts on the front of the view as well.

The obvious reason for having that RSS ticker on the login screen is because quite frankly, I think a lot of the residents just don’t understand RSS. Sure we’ve got a fair bit of the community that understand RSS, at least I think they do, but alot of them probably don’t know about the blog and won’t have the slightest clue as to when a change is about to happen in SL.

If you follow the SLPN Video feed (and if you haven’t…why?) then you may have noticed a new series of videos called 5 Questions where I go around asking avatars 5 questions about their second lives. So far I have released 3 videos (with a fourth coming later today) and those who have watched it have been giving me good feedback.

Since I don’t talk on the videos I figured I’d talk about the recordings on here. So the avatars I’ve interviewed so far are Yxes Delacroix, ArminasX Saiman and Bob Bunderfeld.

Out of those three I’d say my favourite interview so far would probably have to be Bob. Just because he has a unique perspective on Second Life and has very opinionated views on SL which I like.

For those who don’t follow SLPN’s content, we tend to usually have light-hearted and fun shows; This show is different just because it is more of a serious show. Honestly it’s a breath of fresh air for me. That doesn’t mean to say I’m going to get all serious, I’m still going to be crazy old’ Stuart Warf on Podmafia.

If you want to get on this series and get interviewed feel free to IM me or leave a comment. Also tell your friends about this project as I’m after a variety of avatars.

A couple of weeks ago I (stupidly) let one of my RL friends who recently busted his PC to go on my machine and check his facebook. The next thing I know, my pc is getting random popups and I’m like…oh boy.

So I hit up Safe Mode and transferred my files to a safe area and make sure it was all clean and ready for my next job. My next job being either a fresh Windows XP install or do what I was going to do in December anyway, and move up to Vista.

I decided to go up to Windows Vista and let me be quite frankly honest. It is fantastic. It runs brilliantly on my machine, does everything I need to do and actually does it better in some areas.

Second Life’s performance has not really been hampered and my tool for recording SL video (FRAPs) actually seems to configure the audio levels better when I record video. An example of this is that under XP i’d have to configure the audio levels about for a few minutes in order to get it sounding right, which usually would mean i’d have to make the system sounds about half and made it harder for me to hear sometimes. Under Vista, it just works straight away with the levels seemingly set right.

It’s actually made Machinima easier to make, therefore making my life easier when doing videos such as my new 5 Questions series.
