For Frak’s Sake

I’ve been a little annoyed lately. This whole openspace issue has just been bothering me. No, it’s not because Linden Lab has “screwed” it’s customers. It’s the customers themselves.

The thing that is bothering me is the customers saying things like “I’m moving to OpenSim” and “OpenLife is a better cheaper option”. Now anyone who has been following my stuff will know that I love OpenSim and while I’m glad that people are taking it seriously. It isn’t a working and stable product. Infact, those people who hate the instability and problems of Second Life may hate OpenSim right now.

One of the issues with OpenSim right now is that it isn’t finished. It is very buggy. There currently is a lack of built in physics, scripting engine is not complete. Inventory issues and more. Basically, if you want to do, what you do in Second Life then, good luck for now.

Case and Point. MarkTwain White, leader of the SLSF community said on Tonight Live that the new Homestead pricing makes running the community unprofitable and claimed they were already beginning to move to OpenSim.

Now maybe it’s just me, but moving and paying money for an unfinished product is a bit trivial. Theres a lack of a good solid physics engine right now, which boats in Second Life require to run. Scripting Engine isn’t complete yet, which boats in Second Life require to run.

And then theres the bandwith and maintenance costs.

Incase you don’t know, running a simulator will cost money. Especially with high activity and I’m willing to bet people will go budget crazy on these servers to save money and guess what happens. There will be a lot of activity and suddenly the region goes down and you are going to need to buy more bandwith.

Then you have to maintain the server yourself. That’s right, your going to have to go and install patches manually and most likely enter the command line.

All I can say is wait longer if you want to use OpenSim. While it will be cheaper theres a lot more effort required in running and maintaining it.

Wait until at least 1.0 which could be a year yet and not to mention when the Open Grid platform is all set up. Open Grid will mean a smoother transition between spending money on Linden Lab and running your own servers and you will be able to maintain your avatar and inventory.

Agreed. But its is never to early to risk testing something new.

To give people an easy glimpse on OpenSimulator and let them test it without hassles we decided to create the TalentRaspel Sim-O-Box. If you are brave just take a look at http://www.talentraspel-mmokit.de/portal/index.php?id=55
