Mixing it up....
As I have stated before in the past and for those regular readers (which probably don't exist). I tend to flake out when it comes to blogging. Mostly for me it's down to the fact that when I blog, i tend to want to get into the topics in a broader depth based on my opinions.
Part of the problem is that I have an artificial limit on what I can really talk about due to the blog's title, Virtual Thoughts. So, in an attempt to try and get into more blogging. I'm essentially killing off the defined topic talking about Second Life and metaverse based topics and opening it up more to digital technology and current events. Essentially, a more generalised blog. In fact, as I have wrote this entry, I've decided to rename the blog to Digital Thoughts.
Once again, I am going to use Posterous, mostly because it seems to be the best tool for the job when it comes to blogging for me. It works on my iPod / Android phone with relative ease and just because it's a more basic approach for blogging than Wordpress, which I love. This doesn't mean that I will stop blogging about Second Life, just discussing the topics a lot less.
Chatting with a young Rod Humble! Meet Stuart Warf. : Phaylen Fairchild Productions
Stuart Warf blows me away.
He’s a highly successful entrepreneur. He started his own multimedia company, Rezzed.tv, which has become the centerpiece of Second Life’s community. From the live, bi-weekly show featuring The Phoenix developers interfacing with their users, to fashion and sports, Stuart has made his company a genuine asset to many, many users of the platform.
He’s an IT guy- loves to talk tech. He’s an avid gamer (Like myself!) as well as a virtual worlds enthusiast. He’s not interested in frat parties, instead, he travels to Meta Meets, the popular virtual worlds convention, last year, and again this year, to network with the most influential developers in the metaverse. He single handed manages his company, films his programs, provides the live streaming and chat room interfaces that accompanies them, hosts web archives of past shows and panels on on things relative to the user experience. He’s not just a glorified cameraman, he’s an editor, an promoter, and one of the most polite gentlemen on the grid.
He’s also in his (very) early 20′s. Shocked? I was. Listening to Stuart Warf, one might imagine where he’ll be in ten years, because he’s certainly going places. Don’t ask me where I was at 20. Stuart joins me to share his unique take on Second Life, Linden Lab and what he’d like to see from the platform- and where he thinks they’ve gone wrong. He’s a fan of Viewer 2, a “Wait and see” type of guy when asked about Rod Humble, and unafraid to state just what he’d do differently.. and he makes sense!
I’m pleased to introduce you to Stuart Warf. Enjoy the show!

While I'm not quite sure I am deserving of such praise from Phaylen, I had a lot of fun being the on her show recently and hope to be on the show again some day soon.

What Happened to Second Life? A Sweeping Statement?
After watching this video from Chris Pirillo, two words sprung to my mind. The words I thought were "Sweeping Statement".
"A sweeping statement is a statement that makes a wide-ranging and complete comment about something, or more often, everything. Unfortunately, it is very common for people to make these sorts of statements when they, in fact, are talking about minor groups rather than "everybody" "
It always disappoints me when I hear people involved in technology and people who I follow just go out and say things like "Second Life is just for porn" and I think it really is just loses the credibility of the person making that statement even futher. The problem is these people also tend to have a bit of authority and people listen to what they say. I myself follow Chris, not as often as I used to because his YouTube stream got a bit to overkill for my taste.
The point I'm trying to make however is that Second Life is not just for Porn or Gambling. Sure those things exist and I'm not going to deny that. But it is a small portion of the whole package. There is so much happening in Second Life that you cannot define it under one swift statement, and I think that is what is hard about the platform.
Examples of thriving communities within Second Life include the Fashion Industry, The Steampunk Community, The Music Community and much much more. There is a commnity being built around almost everything you can think of that happens in these worlds. That is the true appeal of Second Life for me.
The Killer App of Second Life is, and shall always be, COMMUNITY. Isn't that what these so called "Social Media Experts" job, to build communities around a brand.

UK Government rules out upgrading from Internet Explorer 6
The government has ruled out scrapping the use of Internet Explorer 6 on department computers, saying it will persevere with the bullet-riddled browser despite its high-profile vulnerabilities.
Responding to an online petition with more than 6,000 signatures urging government departments to upgrade away from IE6, the government said such a move would be "a very large operation" potentially at "significant potential cost to the taxpayer".
"It is therefore more cost-effective in many cases to continue to use IE6 and rely on other measures, such as firewalls and malware-scanning software, to further protect public sector internet users," reads the statement.
So, when I heard about this decision happening, the first thing I thought was "We're Screwed". Seriously, IE6 is without a shadow of a doubt the most unsecure web browser ever. Sure it may end up being a large operation with a possible significant cost to the taxpayer if they have to hire a bunch of people to upgrade the systems, but the potential cost to the UK if a major incident occurs.
It's just nice to know that we have a government who is knowledgeable about security and the internet.
